India Sends Largest-Ever Team to WorldSkills Shanghai 2026

NEW DELHI, September 21, 2026 — India is sending its largest-ever contingent of skilled young competitors to the 48th WorldSkills Competition in Shanghai, with 70 participants set to compete across 63 skill categories.
The competition is scheduled to take place from September 22 to 27, 2026, bringing together more than 1,400 competitors from over 60 countries and regions.
India to compete in 63 skill categories
The Indian team will participate in 63 of the 64 skills featured at the Shanghai competition. For the first time, India will compete in 11 new categories, including Dental Prosthetics, Digital Interactive Media Design, Intelligent Security Technology, Landscape Gardening, Optoelectronic Technology, Retail Sales, Unmanned Aerial Systems, Industrial Mechanics, Software Testing, Heavy Vehicle Technology and Aircraft Maintenance.
The Ministry of Skill Development and Entrepreneurship said the participation reflects the expansion of India’s skills ecosystem into advanced technologies, specialised services and newer industrial fields.
Naveen Jindal backs Team India
Naveen Jindal, Member of Parliament and Chairman of Jindal Steel, attended the team’s send-off ceremony at Kaushal Bhawan in New Delhi on September 15.
Jindal Steel is the Official Merchandise Sponsor for Team India’s Shanghai campaign and is supporting the ceremonial and competition attire of the Indian competitors.
The send-off event was also attended by Jayant Chaudhary, Minister of State for Skill Development and Entrepreneurship, along with government officials, training institutions, industry representatives, mentors, competitors and their families.
India’s recent WorldSkills performance
India finished 13th at WorldSkills Lyon 2024, where it won four Bronze Medals and 12 Medallions for Excellence, according to the Ministry of Skill Development and Entrepreneurship. India also placed eighth in Asia at WorldSkills Asia 2025.
Important Fact
The Shanghai competition has not started yet as of September 21. WorldSkills Shanghai 2026 is scheduled for September 22–27, with the skill competitions running from September 23–26.
