September 25, 2026 | Business News – India’s foreign exchange reserves declined by $14.88 billion during the week ended September 18, falling to $765.90 billion, according to the latest Reserve Bank of India data.
The reserves had stood at $780.78 billion in the previous week ended September 11. The latest decline was largely driven by a substantial reduction in India’s foreign currency assets, which make up the biggest component of the country’s forex reserves.
Foreign Currency Assets See Sharp Decline
Foreign currency assets fell by $14.82 billion during the week to $630.98 billion.
The movement in foreign currency assets accounted for almost the entire weekly decline in the overall reserves.
Gold Reserves Rise
While foreign currency assets declined sharply, India’s gold reserves moved in the opposite direction.
The value of gold reserves increased by around $68 million during the week to $111.29 billion, providing a small offset to the overall fall in reserves.
India’s Special Drawing Rights (SDRs) also declined by about $106 million to $18.74 billion, while the country’s reserve position with the International Monetary Fund fell by approximately $27 million to $4.89 billion.
Reserves Still Above March Level
Despite the sharp weekly decline, India’s foreign exchange reserves remained substantially above their level at the end of March 2026.
According to the latest data, reserves were about $74.79 billion higher than the end-March level and approximately $63.33 billion above the level recorded a year earlier.
Forex reserves provide the Reserve Bank of India with a buffer for meeting external payment obligations and dealing with volatility in international financial markets. RBI describes the reserves as comprising foreign currency assets, gold, SDRs and India’s reserve position in the IMF.
