NEW YORK, September 24, 2026 — Leaders of major artificial intelligence companies have urged the United Nations Security Council to strengthen international cooperation and develop safeguards for increasingly powerful AI systems.

OpenAI CEO Sam Altman and Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei addressed the UN Security Council during a session focused on artificial intelligence and international security. They warned that rapidly advancing AI could create serious risks if the technology develops beyond effective human oversight.

Amodei said that poorly managed AI could pose a risk to humanity, while Altman argued that important decisions about the technology should not be left solely to private laboratories. He called for governments and international institutions to play a role in shaping how AI develops.

The discussion also focused on the possibility of AI being used in warfare and other security-sensitive areas. UN officials and AI experts have raised concerns about increasingly autonomous systems and the possibility of machines being involved in decisions with serious consequences.

However, there was disagreement over how much international regulation should be introduced. The US administration argued that concerns about AI risks should not become a reason to halt technological development or create a new global governance structure.

The UN discussion comes as governments around the world are debating how to balance AI’s potential benefits with concerns about safety, security and human control. The debate is expected to continue as AI systems become increasingly capable.

The issue remains under active international discussion, with countries taking different positions on regulation and oversight.
