Hurricane Polo Nears Mexico as Category 3 Storm Ahead of Monday Landfall

 MEXICO CITY – Hurricane Polo is approaching Mexico’s Baja California Sur as a powerful Category 3 hurricane, with authorities warning residents to complete preparations ahead of potentially dangerous conditions expected from Monday.

According to the latest advisory from the U.S. National Hurricane Center (NHC), Polo was located about 285 miles (460 km) west-southwest of Cabo San Lucas early Sunday. The storm was moving north-northwest at around 10 mph (17 km/h), with maximum sustained winds of 120 mph (195 km/h).

Forecasters expect Polo to turn north later Sunday and then northeast on Monday. On the forecast track, the hurricane is expected to approach the western coast of Baja California Sur on Monday, cross the peninsula Monday night and move toward northwestern mainland Mexico by early Tuesday.

A Hurricane Warning is currently in effect for parts of both the western and eastern coasts of Baja California Sur. Hurricane-force conditions are expected along portions of the western coast by Monday afternoon, while tropical-storm conditions could begin earlier in some southern areas.

The NHC said Polo is expected to gradually weaken during the coming days but could remain a strong hurricane when it reaches Baja California Sur. Hurricane-force winds currently extend outward up to about 45 miles (75 km) from the storm’s center, while tropical-storm-force winds extend up to 125 miles (205 km).

Rainfall is another major concern. Polo is forecast to produce 4 to 8 inches (100–200 mm) of rain across parts of Baja California Sur, with isolated totals potentially reaching 10 inches (250 mm). The rainfall could trigger life-threatening flooding and mudslides, particularly in areas with steep terrain.

Large and potentially destructive waves and coastal flooding are also expected. Authorities have already taken precautionary measures in parts of Baja California Sur, including restrictions on maritime activities and closures affecting schools and other operations.

Polo had previously reached much greater intensity before weakening to Category 3. The storm’s strength has fluctuated as it moved across the eastern Pacific, making its final intensity at landfall uncertain. 

Authorities are urging people in areas covered by hurricane warnings and watches to complete preparations before dangerous winds arrive. Residents are also being advised to monitor official forecasts as the storm’s track and intensity could change.
