India-Vietnam Relations: Nations to Celebrate ‘Friendship Year’ in 2027; Vow to Boost Defense and Supply Chain Cooperation
NEW DELHI: In a major diplomatic breakthrough aimed at reshaping Southeast Asian geopolitics, India and Vietnam have officially agreed to designate the upcoming year 2027 as the “Year of India-Vietnam Friendship.” This high-stakes declaration marks the historic 55th anniversary of bilateral diplomatic ties between the two nuclear-age partners. The announcement came immediately after the conclusion of the 19th India-Vietnam Joint Commission Meeting (JCM) on Trade, Economic, Scientific, and Technological Cooperation, co-chaired by Indian External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar and Vietnamese Foreign Affairs Minister Le Hoai Trung in New Delhi.
The bilateral talks, which took place right on the sidelines of India’s highly successful 18th BRICS Summit, provided a massive push to the “Enhanced Comprehensive Strategic Partnership” shared by the two civilizational allies. During the outcome-oriented JCM sessions, both sides reviewed their growing geopolitical trajectories and signed multiple frameworks to scale up field operations.
Deepening Defense Co-Production and Securing Global Supply Chains
On the security front, the two nations identified clear pathways to accelerate mutual defense collaboration, focusing specifically on the co-production of military hardware and advanced defense equipment. To counter global economic fragmentation, ministers focused heavily on building resilient supply chains and expanding regional trade investments. In a crucial economic move, Vietnam officially agreed to fast-track market access for Indian pharmaceutical products, marine cargo, and agricultural goods.
Furthermore, the two delegations vowed to step up financial tech collaborations, port connectivity, and direct air networks. They also unlocked fresh technical opportunities for joint civil space exploration and nuclear energy research. Highlighting the strategic mapping, Minister Jaishankar reiterated that Vietnam remains a key pillar of India’s Act East Policy and a vital anchor under the broader Indo-Pacific Oceans Initiative (IPOI).
High Praise for India’s Successful BRICS Chairship
During the session, Vietnamese Foreign Minister Le Hoai Trung highly commended India’s proactive diplomacy and visionary leadership during the newly concluded 18th BRICS Summit. Trung explicitly attributed the smooth adoption of the substantive New Delhi Declaration to India’s tireless efforts in building a meaningful consensus among diverse international members.
