Trump Says US Could Make Deal With Iran After November Election

 WASHINGTON, September 22, 2026 — U.S. President Donald Trump said Tuesday that he believes the United States could reach a deal with Iran after the U.S. midterm elections scheduled for November 3.

Speaking at the United Nations General Assembly in New York, Trump said he expected an agreement with Tehran shortly after the election. He suggested that Iran was waiting to see the outcome of the U.S. midterm vote before making decisions about negotiations.

Trump’s comments come amid continuing tensions between Washington and Tehran and renewed indications that diplomatic channels could reopen. Iran and the United States have recently signaled some willingness to discuss a possible path toward negotiations, although significant differences remain.

Trump links possible deal to post-election period

Trump told the UN General Assembly that he believed an agreement with Iran could come soon after the November election. He argued that Tehran had an interest in watching the political situation in the United States before deciding its next steps.

The comments represent Trump’s latest public indication that a diplomatic settlement remains possible, despite continued confrontation between the two countries.

Earlier in September, Trump had also said that he expected the conflict with Iran to end after the U.S. midterm elections, while acknowledging that negotiations could potentially take place.

Iran and US signal possible return to talks

The latest comments come as both sides have indicated that diplomacy could resume.

According to Reuters reporting on Tuesday, Iranian officials said Iran’s delegation at the UN had authority to revive negotiations. Tehran has also indicated that it could consider reopening the Strait of Hormuz under certain conditions, including changes in U.S. military pressure and restrictions.

U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio has also said Washington is open to discussions with Iranian officials if such talks could produce a practical outcome. However, there is no confirmed direct meeting between Trump and Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian.

Major issues remain unresolved

Any future agreement would likely involve several difficult issues, including Iran’s nuclear program, sanctions, military activity and regional security.

The two governments have previously reached temporary understandings, but disagreements have continued to prevent a lasting settlement. Reuters reported that an interim agreement reached earlier in 2026 later collapsed, leaving diplomatic efforts uncertain.

Trump’s latest remarks therefore indicate his expectation of a possible agreement, rather than confirmation that a new deal has already been reached.
