Typhoon Dujuan Nears Eastern Japan, Flood and Landslide Warnings Issued

TOKYO, September 21, 2026 — A powerful typhoon was approaching Japan’s Pacific coast on Monday, bringing torrential rain and strong winds while raising the risk of flooding and landslides across eastern Japan, weather authorities said.
Typhoon Dujuan was forecast to pass close to the Tokyo metropolitan area later on Monday, with the Japan Meteorological Agency (JMA) warning that weather conditions could worsen rapidly as the storm moves toward the Kanto region.
Heavy rain hits eastern Japan
Parts of the Izu Islands, Chiba Prefecture and other Pacific coastal areas have already received heavy rainfall. Some locations recorded more than 300 mm of rain since Saturday, according to the Reuters report citing weather authorities.
The JMA warned that rainfall could become heavier from Monday afternoon as Dujuan approaches Kanto, the region that includes Tokyo and neighbouring prefectures.
Authorities are particularly concerned about flash floods, overflowing rivers and landslides. The formation of narrow, persistent rain bands could cause very heavy rainfall over concentrated areas for several hours.
Travel and events disrupted
The approaching storm has already affected transport and public events in Japan.
At least 260 domestic and 15 international flights were cancelled on September 21, according to a report citing airline and airport information. Some railway services were also suspended in Tokyo and nearby areas.
Organisers of the 2026 Asian Games in Aichi Prefecture postponed the equestrian eventing competition because of the approaching typhoon.
Important Fact
Typhoon Dujuan is approaching eastern Japan, but this report does not mean that the storm has made landfall in Tokyo. The JMA forecast it to pass close to the Tokyo metropolitan area, while warning of dangerous rain, winds, flooding and landslides.
