UK Military Base Near RAF Fairford: Homes Evacuated After Explosives Arrests

 LONDON- Police evacuated a number of homes in a village near a British air base used by US forces after several men were arrested on suspicion of offences under the Explosives Act.

Gloucestershire Police declared a major incident in the Whelford area, near RAF Fairford in southwest England. Residents from several properties were moved to a nearby leisure centre while specialist teams investigated the situation.

Police said the arrests involved several men suspected of explosives-related offences. The British Army’s specialist Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) team was called in and began examining a number of vehicles as part of the investigation.

A cordon was established around the affected area as emergency services responded to the incident. Gloucestershire Police said officers believed the situation was contained, while asking residents to follow instructions from authorities.

The incident occurred close to RAF Fairford, a Royal Air Force station in Gloucestershire that has been used by US military aircraft. The base has gained additional attention this year because of its role in US military operations connected with the conflict involving Iran.

However, police have not said that the arrests are directly linked to RAF Fairford. Authorities have also not publicly identified the nature of the suspected explosives or explained what prompted the arrests. Those details remain part of the ongoing investigation.

A significant emergency-services presence was reported around Fairford, including police vehicles, ambulances and fire engines. Armed police were also seen restricting access around the base, according to Reuters reporting.

The US Air Force said it would not comment on specific force-protection measures but said its UK-based units remained vigilant and continued to assess security conditions around its personnel and installations. 

The latest incident comes amid heightened security concerns surrounding military facilities in Britain. British authorities have previously warned about potential security threats to critical infrastructure, while Iran has issued warnings related to countries allowing US military aircraft to operate from their territory. Russia has denied allegations of mounting hybrid attacks against Western countries.

For now, there is no official confirmation that the incident was a terrorist attack or that RAF Fairford itself was the target. Police have described the situation as contained while the investigation continues.

Authorities are expected to provide further information as the examination of the vehicles and the wider investigation progresses.
