Colombia Gold Mine Collapse Kills at Least Six, Up to 15 Miners Reported Missing

At least six miners have died after an open-pit gold mine collapsed in southwestern Colombia, while between 12 and 15 people were reported missing, according to initial reports from local authorities. The incident occurred on Monday, October 19, in the municipality of Santa Bárbara de Iscuandé, in the department of Nariño.

The collapse has triggered an emergency response in a remote area where difficult transport links and security concerns are complicating efforts to assess the full scale of the disaster.

Remote Location Complicates Emergency Response

Santa Bárbara de Iscuandé is surrounded by dense rainforest and is accessible mainly by boat or small aircraft. These geographical challenges have made communication with the affected area difficult, delaying the collection of complete information about the victims and the ongoing response.

Jorge Tovar Castillo, a disaster-response official in Nariño, said six bodies had been reported and that between 12 and 15 additional miners were believed to be missing. Authorities were awaiting further information from the municipality to determine whether additional assistance was required.

The number of people affected could change as officials receive more reliable information from the site.

Mine Reportedly Operated Without Official Authorisation

Nariño Governor Luis Alfonso Escobar described the collapsed mine as an informal operation. Such small-scale mining sites operate in different parts of Colombia, and some work without the permits required by the authorities.

Informal mining can expose workers to serious risks when excavation takes place without adequate safety controls, engineering assessments or effective oversight. However, a full technical explanation for this particular collapse had not been established in the initial reports.

The authorities have not yet provided a complete account of the circumstances that caused the ground to give way.

Security Concerns Add to the Challenges

The affected municipality also faces security difficulties linked to the presence of armed groups in the wider region. These conditions can make it harder for emergency personnel and humanitarian workers to reach isolated communities safely.

Colombia’s Ombudsman’s Office called on armed groups to allow humanitarian assistance to reach the affected area, stressing that the immediate priority should be protecting lives and responding to the emergency.

Local authorities have been coordinating the response while seeking clearer information about the missing miners and the support required at the site.

Death Toll Still Being Assessed

Initial reporting on the incident has not been entirely consistent. While an Associated Press report cited at least six deaths and 12 to 15 people missing, other Colombian and international reports published on October 19 cited a higher preliminary death toll of nine.

The figures may reflect different reporting times as information emerged from the remote location. A final verified toll was not available in the initial reports reviewed for this article.

The immediate focus remains on locating anyone who may still be trapped, supporting affected families and establishing the full number of casualties.
