Crackdown in China: Beijing Accused of Using State Violence and Political Coercion to Suppress Religious Freedom

BEIJING: The Chinese administration is intensifying its use of state violence and heavy political coercion to aggressively dismantle religious freedoms and target independent human rights defense lawyers, a series of international rights watchdogs have reported.
According to data compiled by Human Rights Watch, over a dozen major cities across mainland China introduced strict municipal policies during the first half of 2026 that offer financial rewards to citizens who report what the state classifies as “unauthorized” or “illegal” religious events। The bounty system is part of a sweeping, nation-wide domestic surveillance escalation.
Systemic Targeting of Legal Counsel
The immense pressure on legal professionals representing targeted congregations was highlighted by the sudden flight of prominent attorney Ruth Wang. Wang was forced to flee mainland China and seek political asylum during a transit in Taiwan on September 2 after intelligence officials repeatedly threatened to dissolve her firm, VDoor Law Firm.
The targeted legal firm represents leadership members of the Zion Church—widely regarded as one of China’s largest independent underground Christian networks. Highlighting the severity of the institutional clampdown, defense analyst Shen Ming-shih observed that Beijing’s underlying strategy is to systematically strip all persecuted religious factions of professional legal defense, leaving them fully isolated and voiceless against state action.
Rewriting Religious Texts Under “Sinicization”
While the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) officially acknowledges five bureaucratic patriotic religious associations, independent foreign oversight commissions maintain that the regime micromanages and restricts all operational affairs.
Legal scholars have raised international alarms over China’s aggressive national policy of “Sinicization.” Under this policy, state departments are systematically modifying core religious scriptures, including the Holy Bible and the Quran, to demand complete political loyalty to President Xi Jinping and the communist apparatus above any spiritual doctrine.
