Heavy Rain Floods Bangkok, Disrupts Traffic as Thailand Capital Faces More Rain

 Bangkok: Heavy and persistent rainfall has caused widespread flooding across Bangkok, inundating roads and disrupting traffic in several parts of Thailand’s capital. The situation has prompted city authorities to issue warnings to motorists and residents as more heavy rain is forecast.

Bangkok Governor Chadchart Sittipunt declared the capital a disaster-affected zone on Saturday after residents woke to extensive flooding. Reuters reported that some areas had received more than 150 mm of rain, while rainfall had continued for more than 24 hours.

Roads Flooded Across Bangkok

Floodwater has affected multiple roads and routes, creating difficult conditions for commuters. Bangkok’s flood prevention centre warned drivers of small cars to avoid seven locations where water levels were considered unsafe for passage.

Several other routes were also reported to have flooding and traffic disruption, including parts of Vibhavadi Rangsit Road, Ratchadaphisek Road, Lat Krabang Road and Ramkhamhaeng Road.

Videos shared on social media showed vehicles partially submerged in floodwater, while emergency services assisted people affected by the flooding. The Bangkok City Administration has also opened a shelter for evacuees.

Thailand’s Meteorological Department said an active low-pressure system is affecting the lower Central region, including Bangkok and nearby areas. The department forecast widespread thunderstorms and scattered heavy to very heavy rain in Bangkok on September 26.

The weather agency has warned that heavy rainfall and accumulated water could lead to flash flooding and overflows, particularly in low-lying areas and near waterways. Its broader warning covers September 26–27.

Authorities Urge Residents to Take Precautions

Officials have advised people living near canals and other vulnerable areas to move belongings to higher ground. Motorists have also been urged to check road and water conditions before travelling and avoid flooded routes.

The continuing rainfall means conditions could remain difficult in parts of Bangkok, particularly where drainage systems are overwhelmed by accumulated water.
