Boeing Wins FAA Approval for Largest 737 MAX Jet, Clearing Path for Deliveries
Boeing has secured a major regulatory milestone after the US Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) granted certification to the 737 MAX 10, the largest aircraft in its popular 737 MAX family. The approval clears the way for the manufacturer to begin delivering the long-delayed jet to airline customers, with the first deliveries expected in 2027.
The certification is an important development for Boeing as it works to strengthen its commercial aircraft business and compete more effectively in the global single-aisle aircraft market. The MAX 10 is designed to carry more passengers than other versions of the 737 MAX, making it an attractive option for airlines operating busy domestic and regional routes.
However, the US approval is not the final regulatory step for every market. Boeing is still working towards certification from Canadian and European aviation authorities before deliveries can proceed to all customers.
FAA Approval Follows Extensive Testing
The FAA's decision follows a lengthy certification process involving flight testing, engineering reviews and assessments of aircraft safety systems.
According to Boeing, the programme included nearly 1,000 test flights, more than 2,000 flight hours and approximately 1,000 hours of ground testing. Regulators also reviewed technical documentation and the aircraft's compliance with updated certification requirements.
The MAX 10's approval is particularly significant because the 737 MAX programme has faced heightened scrutiny following two fatal crashes involving the MAX 8 in 2018 and 2019, which killed 346 people. A separate 2024 incident involving a door-plug panel on a 737 MAX 9 further intensified attention on Boeing's manufacturing quality and safety oversight.
The FAA required additional safety measures as part of the certification process, including an enhanced angle-of-attack system designed to improve the reliability of flight information. Boeing says the enhancement will also become standard across the wider 737 MAX family.
What Makes the 737 MAX 10 Different?
The 737 MAX 10 is the largest member of Boeing's single-aisle MAX range. In a maximum-seat configuration, the aircraft can accommodate up to 230 passengers. In a typical two-class layout, Boeing says it can seat approximately 185 to 210 passengers.
The aircraft has a published range of up to 3,100 nautical miles, or about 5,740 kilometres. Its higher seating capacity is intended to help airlines serve high-demand routes while retaining the operational advantages of a single-aisle aircraft.
Boeing's 737 MAX family is designed to share common features across its different models, helping airlines simplify pilot training, maintenance and fleet management when operating multiple versions.
The MAX 10 is intended to compete directly with Airbus's A321neo, which has gained ground in the market for larger single-aisle aircraft.
More Than 1,500 Aircraft Orders
The MAX 10 already has a substantial customer base. Boeing reported 1,555 orders for the aircraft from more than 30 customers, representing over 30% of the 737 MAX programme's current order book.
Airlines including United Airlines, Alaska Airlines, Delta Air Lines, American Airlines and Ryanair have ordered the model. The aircraft's increased capacity could help carriers accommodate passenger growth on heavily travelled routes without moving to larger wide-body aircraft.
For Boeing, the backlog represents an opportunity to generate future revenue as the company moves towards deliveries. However, turning those orders into completed aircraft deliveries will depend on production readiness, regulatory approvals and the company's ability to maintain quality standards.
Airbus Competition Remains a Major Challenge
The certification comes after years of delays, during which Airbus's A321neo strengthened its position in the larger single-aisle market.
The A321neo offers airlines additional seating capacity and range, making it suitable for routes that require more passengers than smaller narrow-body jets can accommodate. Boeing's MAX 10 is designed to challenge that position by offering higher capacity while retaining commonality with the existing 737 fleet.
The prolonged approval process has complicated some airlines' fleet-planning decisions. The FAA's certification now gives Boeing a clearer route towards fulfilling orders, although customers will still need to prepare for aircraft entry into service.
What Happens Next?
Boeing expects the first 737 MAX 10 deliveries to take place in 2027, with Canada's WestJet among the initial customers. Further approvals from Canadian and European regulators will be important for the aircraft's international rollout.
The manufacturer must also demonstrate that it can increase deliveries while meeting regulatory expectations for manufacturing quality and safety. The FAA's approval is an important step, but sustained performance in production and airline operations will determine the aircraft's longer-term commercial success.
The bottom line: The FAA's certification of Boeing's 737 MAX 10 removes a major obstacle for the aircraft programme. With more than 1,500 orders on the books, the jet could play an important role in Boeing's recovery and its competition with Airbus. The next milestones will be international certification, the start of deliveries and the aircraft's entry into airline service.
