Bangladesh Beach Resort Fire Kills 10, Including a Child, in Cox’s Bazar
At least 10 people, including a five-year-old child, were killed when a fire swept through a beach resort in southeastern Bangladesh on Saturday morning. Several others were injured as flames rapidly engulfed the wooden building in a popular tourist destination.
The fire broke out at Tuptup Resto and Resort in the Inani area of Cox’s Bazar district, near the Bay of Bengal. The three-storey resort was severely damaged, and emergency teams searched the site for victims after bringing the blaze under control.
Authorities said the cause of the fire had not been conclusively established. The tragedy has also raised serious concerns about fire safety arrangements at tourist accommodation facilities in the region.
Fire Breaks Out at Tourist Resort
The fire was reported at around 7:25 a.m. on Saturday, October 17. Firefighters rushed to the location and worked to contain the flames as they spread through the wooden structure.
The building housed a restaurant on its ground floor, while the upper floors were used to accommodate tourists. The combustible construction may have contributed to the rapid spread of the blaze, although investigators must determine the exact circumstances.
Rescue teams recovered 10 bodies from the site. A five-year-old boy was among those identified in early local reporting. Authorities were also working to establish the identities of the other victims and confirm details about those injured.
Resort Had Previously Received a Safety Warning
Bangladesh’s Fire Service and Civil Defence chief said the resort had been inspected in June and identified as vulnerable to fire hazards. The establishment was reportedly warned about the risks but continued operating.
The official also said the resort lacked the required fire safety licence and certification. The reported findings have intensified questions about how the facility continued to receive guests despite the identified safety concerns.
Authorities are expected to examine whether fire safety requirements were followed, what emergency equipment was available and whether adequate escape routes existed inside the building.
Cause of the Fire Still Under Investigation
Some initial local reports suggested that an electrical short circuit may have started the fire. Other accounts referred to a possible kitchen-related source. Neither explanation should be treated as confirmed until investigators establish the cause.
Officials have said that the circumstances surrounding the fire require a thorough investigation. The extent of the damage and the sequence of events that led to the deaths also remain subjects of scrutiny.
Safety Concerns for Bangladesh’s Tourist Areas
Cox’s Bazar is one of Bangladesh’s major tourism destinations, attracting visitors to its beaches and coastal resorts. The deaths have renewed attention on the risks posed by wooden buildings and accommodation facilities operating without the required fire safety approvals.
Fire alarms, extinguishers, safe electrical systems and unobstructed emergency exits are essential measures for protecting guests and staff. Authorities will need to determine whether failures in these areas contributed to the tragedy.
The immediate priorities are to complete the rescue and identification process, provide care to injured people and establish accountability if safety violations are confirmed.
The investigation will also be important in determining whether similar resorts require urgent inspections to reduce the risk of another deadly fire.
