At Least 12 Killed as Passenger Bus Collides With Van in Pakistan’s Balochistan
At least 12 people were killed and more than 20 others injured after a passenger bus collided with a van in Pakistan’s southwestern Balochistan province on Friday, according to local police and rescue officials.
The deadly crash occurred near Uthal Zero Point in Lasbela district, along a major road in the region. Rescue teams, police personnel and local residents rushed to the scene to help the victims and transport the injured to nearby hospitals.
Officials said the injured included women and children. Some victims required further medical treatment, and the injured were transferred to hospitals, including facilities in Karachi, according to local reports.
How the collision happened
Initial reports indicated that the bus and van collided on the highway near Uthal. Police said the bus was travelling towards Karachi when the accident occurred. Reports differed on the precise journey details of the two vehicles, and the circumstances leading to the collision were still being investigated.
A police officer cited in local reporting said the crash involved a speeding bus and a van approaching from the opposite direction. The road’s curve near the collision point was also mentioned in reports, although investigators had not publicly established a final cause.
Authorities began an investigation to determine how the two vehicles collided. The findings will be important in establishing whether speed, road conditions, driver error or other factors contributed to the tragedy.
Rescue operations and treatment
Emergency responders worked to remove the injured from the vehicles and arrange medical assistance. Ambulances transported victims to nearby medical facilities, while some injured passengers were referred to hospitals in Karachi for further treatment.
Hospital officials reported that women and children were among those killed or injured. The number of people requiring medical care placed additional pressure on emergency response teams as they worked to assist survivors.
Police and rescue personnel also worked at the crash site to manage the situation and help restore traffic movement. Major highway accidents can disrupt transport for other motorists, particularly when emergency vehicles and recovery operations need access to the road.
The authorities had not released a complete account of every victim’s identity at the time of the initial reports. Further official information may clarify the final casualty figures and the condition of those receiving treatment.
Road safety concerns in Balochistan
The crash has once again drawn attention to road safety in Balochistan, where long-distance travel and highway accidents have been recurring concerns. The province includes major routes connecting Quetta, Karachi, Gwadar and other areas, making highway safety important for passengers, commercial transport and local communities.
Road accidents can result from a combination of factors, including excessive speed, unsafe overtaking, driver fatigue, vehicle maintenance problems and difficult road conditions. However, investigators must establish the specific circumstances before assigning responsibility for this particular collision.
A separate deadly bus crash in Balochistan in July reportedly killed around 40 people after a coach plunged into a ravine. The incident highlighted the potentially devastating consequences of serious road accidents in the province.
Road safety experts commonly emphasise measures such as enforcing speed limits, ensuring vehicles are roadworthy, improving hazardous road sections and requiring drivers to follow safe driving practices. Effective emergency response and timely access to hospital care are also essential after major collisions.
Investigation underway
Police are continuing to investigate the Uthal collision to establish the sequence of events and identify the factors responsible. Authorities are expected to gather evidence from the scene and review relevant witness accounts as part of their inquiry.
For the families of those killed, the crash has brought sudden loss and uncertainty. The injured face medical treatment and recovery, while officials work to establish the full circumstances of the accident.
The confirmed initial toll stands at at least 12 deaths, with more than 20 people reported injured. The final number of casualties and the official findings on the cause of the collision remain subject to further updates.
