BJP Sweeps Gandhinagar Civic Polls With 38 Seats as Congress Makes Gains, AAP Draws Blank
The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has retained control of the Gandhinagar Municipal Corporation in Gujarat, winning 38 of the 44 seats in the civic elections, according to results declared on Tuesday.
The Indian National Congress secured five seats, improving its performance compared with the previous election, while an independent candidate won the remaining seat. The Aam Aadmi Party (AAP), which had one representative in the previous civic body, failed to win any seats this time.
The results maintain the BJP’s control of the civic body in Gujarat’s capital, although its seat tally declined from the 41 seats it won in the 2021 election. Congress increased its tally from two seats to five.
Ward 6 Gives Congress a Major Boost
One of the most notable outcomes came from Ward 6, where Congress won all four seats. The result gave the opposition party a clear gain in a civic body where the BJP retained a substantial majority.
Congress also won one seat in Ward 7. The BJP’s reduced tally, alongside Congress’s improvement, marks a change in the distribution of seats compared with the previous election, even though the overall control of the corporation remains with the ruling party.
An independent woman candidate, Deepika Vaghela, won the seat in Ward 2, securing 4,909 votes, according to election reporting.
How the Results Compare With 2021
The Gandhinagar Municipal Corporation has 44 seats spread across 11 wards. The 2026 election results differ from those recorded in 2021.
• BJP: 38 seats in 2026, compared with 41 in 2021.
• Congress: 5 seats in 2026, compared with 2 in 2021.
• AAP: No seats in 2026, after winning 1 in 2021.
• Independent: 1 seat in 2026.
The figures show that the BJP retained its majority, while Congress gained three seats. AAP lost its representation in the corporation.
Voter Turnout and Election Background
Voting took place on October 11 across 295 polling stations, with 130 candidates contesting the 44 seats. The reported voter turnout in Gandhinagar was 59.25%, higher than the approximately 56% recorded in the 2021 civic polls.
Election officials said minor electronic voting machine issues were addressed during polling. Counting and results were conducted on October 13.
The outcome also comes alongside civic elections in other parts of Gujarat, including Thara and Okha, where the BJP retained control of the respective local bodies.
What the Result Means for Gandhinagar
The BJP’s 38-seat tally gives it a clear majority to continue governing the municipal corporation. Congress’s improved result provides it with a larger presence in the civic body, particularly following its sweep of Ward 6.
AAP’s failure to win a seat means it will not have elected representation in the new Gandhinagar civic council. The results offer a picture of local political support in the state capital, but they should not automatically be treated as a forecast of outcomes in future state or national elections.
