Indian Women’s Hockey

India’s women’s hockey team created history at the 2026 Asian Games in Aichi-Nagoya, defeating defending champions China 1-0 in the final to reclaim the continental title after a 44-year wait.

The victory in Kakamigahara, Japan, gave India its second-ever Asian Games gold medal in women’s hockey and also secured a direct qualification spot for the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics. India’s previous women’s hockey gold had come at the 1982 Asian Games.

Lalremsiami delivers the decisive goal

The only goal of the final came in the 10th minute.Lalremsiami, making her 200th international appearance, produced a powerful reverse-hit to beat Chinese goalkeeper Liu Ping and put India ahead. The goal proved decisive in a match where China repeatedly tested the Indian defence.

India had to absorb sustained pressure after taking the lead, with China looking for an equaliser. The Chinese side, ranked higher internationally and the defending Asian Games champions, created several attacking opportunities but could not find the breakthrough.

Savita Punia makes crucial save

One of the most important moments came when China was awarded a penalty stroke.

Veteran Indian goalkeeper Savita Punia produced a crucial one-handed save, diving to her left to deny China's Zhang Ying.

The stop allowed India to retain its narrow advantage.India's defence continued to withstand China's attacks through the remaining quarters. Despite China's repeated circle entries and pressure in the closing stages, the Indian team protected its lead until the final whistle.

Gold after 44 years

The triumph marks India's first Asian Games women's hockey gold since 1982.India had come close to reclaiming the title in the past.

The team finished runner-up in 1998, losing the final to South Korea, and again in 2018, when Japan won the gold.

The latest victory therefore ended one of the longest waits in Indian women's hockey and restored the team to the top of the Asian Games podium.

Olympic qualification secured

The gold medal also carries significance beyond the Asian Games.

India's victory over China earned the team a direct berth at the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics.

The qualification comes after the Indian women's hockey team missed the Paris 2024 Olympics. For the players, the Asian Games final therefore represented both a chance to reclaim the continental title and an opportunity to secure their return to the Olympic stage.

A landmark day for Indian hockey

India's win over China was part of a strong medal-winning day for the country at the Aichi-Nagoya Asian Games. The women's hockey gold was India's sixth gold medal of the day across several sports, according to Indian Express' live coverage.

The result also underlined the team's ability to defend a narrow lead against a strong opponent. Lalremsiami's early strike provided the advantage, while Savita Punia and the Indian defence ensured China could not turn its pressure into an equaliser.

For Indian women's hockey, the final whistle brought an end to a 44-year wait and opened the road to another Olympic campaign.
