Gunmen Target Traders Returning From Market in Central Nigeria
Gunmen opened fire on a vehicle carrying traders returning from a livestock market in Nigeria’s Plateau State, killing one person and injuring seven others, according to local media reports.
The attack took place on Sunday, October 4, along the Bukuru area of Jos South Local Government Area, as the traders travelled back from Kara Bukuru Livestock Market. The incident renewed concerns about the safety of people travelling along commercial routes in the north-central Nigerian state.
Local reports identified the deceased as Musa Abubakar. The injured victims were taken for medical treatment, while the Plateau State Police Command said seven people had been traced to a military clinic in Jos after a related shooting involving traders returning from the market.
Police launch investigation
Police condemned the shooting and said investigative teams had been mobilised to identify those responsible. The command also strengthened security deployments in the area and urged residents to report suspicious activity.
The identities of the attackers and their motive were not immediately established in the reports. No group was confirmed as responsible.
The attack has prompted calls from community representatives for stronger security along the market route and for authorities to prevent further violence against traders.
Growing security concerns
Plateau State, in north-central Nigeria, has experienced recurring violence involving armed groups, criminal gangs and disputes between farming and herding communities. The causes and circumstances differ from one incident to another, and responsibility for this particular attack had not been established in the available reports.
Markets are important sources of income for traders, livestock sellers and surrounding communities. Attacks on people travelling to and from commercial centres can disrupt livelihoods and increase fear among residents.
What happens next?
Police investigations are expected to focus on identifying the gunmen and establishing the circumstances of the shooting. Local representatives have called for stronger protection for traders and other residents using the route.
