North Ubangi

The Ebola outbreak in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DR Congo) has spread to North Ubangi, the eighth province affected, raising fresh concerns about the disease’s continued expansion near the country’s border with the Central African Republic.

According to a Reuters report published on October 15, two health officials said two Ebola cases had been confirmed in North Ubangi. The cases had not yet been officially announced by Congolese authorities at the time of the report.

The outbreak is caused by the Bundibugyo virus, a rare type of Ebola virus. First declared in mid-May 2026, the outbreak has become the largest Ebola outbreak recorded in DR Congo, with more than 9,000 confirmed cases and over 4,000 deaths reported, according to Reuters.

Where Were the New Cases Detected?

A health official in North Ubangi told Reuters that a series of suspected deaths had recently occurred in a mining area in the Wapinda health zone. The area is close to the border with Bas-Uele province.

The reports prompted samples to be analysed at a provincial laboratory and in Kinshasa, the Congolese capital. The two cases were subsequently reported by health officials, although formal public confirmation from the national authorities was still awaited.

North Ubangi’s location makes the development significant for regional public health monitoring. The province lies in northwestern DR Congo, near the Central African Republic, where cross-border movement can complicate efforts to identify exposed people and monitor possible transmission.

The latest development follows the outbreak’s earlier spread to Sud-Ubangi, another northwestern province bordering the Central African Republic. The World Health Organization had documented that expansion in September.

Congo’s Ebola Outbreak Continues to Challenge Health Authorities

The outbreak has affected multiple provinces, with Ituri remaining its main epicentre. Reuters reported that cases have also been confirmed in North Kivu, South Kivu, Tshopo, Haut-Uele, Bas-Uele and South Ubangi, alongside the newly affected North Ubangi province.

The rapid geographical spread has increased the burden on health teams responsible for identifying new infections, tracing contacts, testing suspected cases and supporting patients.

The WHO has previously warned that insecurity, displacement and limited access to healthcare are making outbreak control more difficult. Delays in detecting infections can allow transmission to continue within households, communities and healthcare facilities.

The scale of the outbreak also highlights the need for sustained coordination between national authorities, local health services and international partners.

What Is the Bundibugyo Strain of Ebola?

Bundibugyo virus causes a severe illness that can spread through direct contact with the blood or other bodily fluids of an infected person, including after death, or through contaminated materials.

Early symptoms may include fever, fatigue, muscle pain, headache and sore throat. These symptoms can resemble other illnesses, making laboratory testing important for confirmation.

The WHO’s September assessment stated that there was no approved vaccine or specific treatment for Bundibugyo virus disease at that time. Outbreak response therefore relies on early detection, supportive medical care, isolation where appropriate, contact tracing, infection prevention and safe burial practices.

Cross-Border Surveillance Becomes More Important

The appearance of cases in North Ubangi adds to concerns about the risk of transmission across national borders. The outbreak has also been associated with cases reported in Uganda earlier in 2026 and more recent infections in Kenya, according to Reuters.

Health authorities must work to identify people who may have been exposed, monitor contacts and ensure that suspected cases can be tested promptly. Coordination between neighbouring countries is particularly important in border areas where people travel for trade, work and family reasons.

However, the reported expansion does not by itself establish that a wider international outbreak is inevitable. The extent of further spread will depend on how quickly cases are detected and how effectively public health measures are implemented.

For now, the key development is the reported confirmation of two cases in North Ubangi, which would bring the outbreak to eight affected provinces. Formal updates from DR Congo’s health authorities and the WHO are needed to clarify the latest case details and response measures.
