Iran Hangs Baluch Man Convicted in Deadly Police Station Assault in Southeast
Iran has executed Mohammad Aref Shahbakhsh, a Baluch man convicted over an armed assault on a police station in the country’s southeastern Sistan-Baluchestan province, according to Iranian state media and judicial authorities. The execution was carried out on Saturday after the country’s judiciary said the legal process had been completed.
Iranian authorities identified Shahbakhsh as a member or operative linked to Jaish al-Adl, a Sunni militant organisation that has claimed responsibility for attacks against Iranian security forces. The group operates mainly in southeastern Iran, close to the border with Pakistan, where armed confrontations between militants and government forces have continued for years.
The judiciary said Shahbakhsh was involved in an armed attack on the Qaleh Bid police station in Khash County, in Sistan-Baluchestan. According to the official account, several police personnel were killed or wounded during the assault. However, authorities did not disclose the exact date of the attack or provide a specific breakdown of the casualties.
Iran’s judiciary said the death sentence was carried out after the conviction and completion of the required legal procedures. The case involved two charges under Iran’s legal system: baghi, referring to armed rebellion against the state, and moharebeh, commonly translated as “waging war against God”.
The execution was reported by Mizan Online, a media outlet affiliated with Iran’s judiciary. Iranian authorities have frequently used security-related charges in cases involving people accused of belonging to armed opposition groups. The government considers Jaish al-Adl an outlawed militant organisation.
Who was Mohammad Aref Shahbakhsh?
Shahbakhsh was a Baluch man from a region that has experienced persistent security tensions. Iranian state-linked reporting described him as an operative associated with Jaish al-Adl and connected his conviction to the attack on the Qaleh Bid police station.
The publicly reported information about the case remains limited. The latest official account did not provide detailed information about the evidence presented in court, the precise circumstances of his arrest or the timeline of the judicial proceedings. It also did not specify how many people were killed or injured in the police station assault.
The distinction is important because the allegations and conviction have been reported primarily through Iranian judicial and state-media statements. Independent details about the trial and the evidence against Shahbakhsh were not immediately available in the reports announcing the execution.
Why Sistan-Baluchestan remains a security flashpoint
Sistan-Baluchestan, which borders Pakistan and Afghanistan, is one of Iran’s most economically disadvantaged provinces. It has a significant Sunni Muslim and ethnic Baluch population, while Iran’s political establishment is predominantly Shia.
The province has experienced decades of tensions involving local communities, Iranian security forces and armed organisations. Issues frequently raised in reporting on the region include poverty, limited economic opportunities, political and religious grievances, and allegations of discrimination. These conditions form part of the wider background to the recurring violence, although they do not explain or justify attacks on civilians or security personnel.
Jaish al-Adl emerged around 2012 and has carried out numerous attacks against Iranian security forces. Tehran considers the group a terrorist organisation and has repeatedly launched security operations in response to attacks in the region.
The group has also been linked to earlier violent incidents involving police and military personnel. Its activities have made the Iran-Pakistan border area an important security concern for both countries.
A recent rise in armed incidents
The execution comes amid reports of increased armed activity in southeastern Iran. The US-based Human Rights Activists News Agency (HRANA) documented at least 63 armed incidents across the region between March 31 and October 10, 2026. According to its reporting, the incidents resulted in at least 94 deaths and 33 injuries.
The recorded incidents included attacks on patrol vehicles, targeted shootings and assaults involving heavier weapons. Some attacks were claimed by armed organisations, while many others could not be reliably attributed to a specific group.
A report published by Iran International in October also described the emergence of a coalition of Baluch armed factions known as the People’s Fighters Front. The alliance includes Jaish al-Adl and several smaller groups. Its formation has added another dimension to the security situation, as different factions seek to coordinate their activities.
The figures reported by HRANA cover a wider period and multiple incidents; they should not be confused with casualty figures from the Qaleh Bid police station attack, which Iranian authorities have not specified.
Execution raises broader questions about Iran’s use of capital punishment
Iran’s use of the death penalty in cases involving alleged armed opposition activity has drawn attention from international human rights organisations. Rights groups have repeatedly raised concerns about capital punishment, due process and the treatment of prisoners accused of security-related offences.
Iranian authorities maintain that executions are carried out under the country’s laws and judicial procedures. In cases involving attacks on security personnel, officials often present capital punishment as a response to serious threats to national security.
Critics, however, have called for greater transparency in judicial proceedings and independent scrutiny of cases involving political or security charges. Such concerns are particularly significant in regions where access to information can be restricted and independent verification of court proceedings may be difficult.
Shahbakhsh’s execution is the latest development in the continuing confrontation between Iranian authorities and armed groups operating in Sistan-Baluchestan. It also highlights the difficult security environment along Iran’s southeastern frontier, where attacks on state forces and subsequent security operations have repeatedly fuelled tensions.
For now, important details surrounding the police station assault and the trial remain undisclosed. The execution confirms that Iran has carried out the sentence, but the available public reporting does not provide a complete independent account of the case or the evidence used to convict Shahbakhsh.
