Cornell University to Reassess Greek Life After Rape Allegations Spark Outcry
Cornell University President Michael Kotlikoff has said the university will take a “serious look” at the role of fraternities and sororities on campus following renewed scrutiny over its handling of a former student’s allegations of rape at a fraternity house in 2024.
Kotlikoff addressed the Cornell community in an eight-minute video message as public criticism intensified over the university’s response to the allegations and questions emerged about how the original investigation was handled. He said Cornell would seek greater transparency, accountability and safety while examining the future role of Greek organizations on campus.
Allegations date back to 2024
The controversy centers on allegations made by a former Cornell student, identified in court documents as Jane Doe. She alleges that she was drugged and sexually assaulted by several members of the Chi Phi fraternity at a fraternity house in Ithaca, New York, in October 2024.
The woman has filed a civil lawsuit against Cornell University, seven former students and other parties. The allegations have triggered renewed public attention after information from the case and previously undisclosed investigative material became public.
The men named in the lawsuit have denied wrongdoing, and the allegations have not resulted in criminal convictions. The criminal investigation remains active.
Cornell faces questions over its response
Cornell conducted its own internal investigation after the allegations were reported. According to court documents and reporting by the Associated Press and Washington Post, the university interviewed numerous witnesses and imposed disciplinary measures on some students.
The Chi Phi chapter was suspended following the incident and was subsequently closed. Some students faced expulsions or suspensions, while Cornell has disputed claims circulating online that students found responsible for sexual assault were simply given minor educational penalties.
The handling of the case has nevertheless prompted criticism from students, alumni and others who argue that the university and local authorities did not respond adequately to the allegations.
Kotlikoff acknowledged that Cornell has faced difficult questions about its response.
“We don't have all the answers,” he said, while pledging that the university would work to find them and improve its handling of sexual-assault cases.
Criminal investigation transferred to New York attorney general
The controversy has also expanded beyond Cornell.
New York Governor Kathy Hochul recently appointed state Attorney General Letitia James as a special prosecutor to oversee the criminal investigation. Hochul said she had lost confidence in the local prosecutor's handling of the case.
The decision followed criticism of the original investigation and the way information from the alleged victim's account was communicated to prosecutors. The case had initially been closed without criminal charges, but the investigation was later reopened after new information emerged.
The case has also generated debate over New York's laws concerning sexual assault and voluntary intoxication. Critics argue that existing legal provisions can make prosecution difficult when a person voluntarily consumes alcohol or drugs but later becomes too impaired to consent. Hochul has indicated support for changing the law.
Cornell promises independent review
Kotlikoff said Cornell's Board of Trustees would announce details of an independent review of the university's handling of the case.
The review is expected to examine how the university responded when the allegations were reported, how its internal investigation was conducted and whether changes are needed to prevent similar situations.
Cornell has also expressed support for the state's renewed criminal investigation and said it intends to cooperate with the authorities.
Debate over fraternities and sororities
The controversy has placed Cornell's wider fraternity and sorority system under renewed scrutiny.
Kotlikoff said Greek organizations can provide students with friendship, mentorship and a sense of community. But he stressed that membership in a group cannot reduce an individual's responsibility for their own actions or for protecting others.
The university plans to seek views from students, alumni and other members of the Cornell community as it considers how Greek life should operate in the future.
The debate comes as universities across the United States continue to face questions about sexual assault, alcohol and drug use, fraternity culture and institutional accountability.
Investigation remains ongoing
The Cornell case remains unresolved in the criminal justice system. The civil lawsuit is also continuing, while New York authorities conduct a renewed investigation.
The allegations against the former fraternity members remain allegations, and the accused have denied wrongdoing. The independent review of Cornell's response could provide additional information about how the university handled the case and whether institutional changes are necessary.
For Cornell, the controversy has become a broader examination of campus safety and the role of Greek organizations in student life.
Kotlikoff's decision to reassess fraternities and sororities signals that the university intends to examine not only the specific case but also the policies and culture surrounding Greek life.
