Mauritius Extends Curfew as Unrest Over Water Shortages and Police Shooting Intensifies
Mauritius has extended its nighttime curfew for two more nights and strengthened security after days of unrest linked to water shortages, rising living costs and a police shooting that wounded a 27-year-old woman.
The protests intensified after the woman was shot in Camp Levieux, near the capital, Port Louis. The police officer involved was taken into custody as authorities investigate the incident. Demonstrators reportedly blocked roads, burned tyres and damaged public property.
Arrests and Security Measures
The government reported 94 arrests through Tuesday, including 16 minors and a police officer. Police recorded another 26 arrests during Wednesday night’s operations. Authorities have announced increased police deployments and additional checkpoints in affected areas.
The latest restrictions cover designated areas and run from 8:30 p.m. to 5 a.m. on Wednesday and Thursday nights, ending Friday morning. Schools are expected to remain closed for the rest of the week, with exceptions for some international examinations.
Water Shortages and Rising Prices
Public frustration has grown amid falling reservoir levels and higher living costs. Annual inflation reached 4.1% in September, while the Mare aux Vacoas reservoir was reported at just 35.7% capacity. The government has announced emergency water measures, including water tankers and new boreholes.
