The visit began with a major ceremonial welcome, including a red-carpet reception and a military ceremony. Trump described his relationship with Xi as a close friendship, while Xi called for the United States and China to maintain a stable relationship and manage their competition.

Trade remains a key issue

Trade is one of the central issues in the talks. The United States and China have agreed to extend their existing trade truce by two months, moving its expected expiry from November 10 to January 10, 2027. The extension gives both sides additional time to negotiate a broader arrangement.

The previous trade conflict involved tariffs exceeding 100% on some goods, making the continuation of the truce important for businesses in both countries.

Taiwan and technology on the agenda

The summit also covers some of the most sensitive areas in US-China relations, including Taiwan, artificial intelligence, advanced technology and export controls.

According to China’s official Xinhua news agency, Xi urged Washington to oppose Taiwan independence during the leaders’ discussions. The White House had not immediately released a corresponding readout on that part of the conversation when Reuters reported it.

AI is another major area of competition. Both governments are seeking advantages in advanced artificial intelligence and related technologies, while restrictions on semiconductor exports remain a source of tension.

Iran also part of wider discussions

The two governments also face differences over the war involving Iran. Washington has sought greater Chinese pressure on Tehran, while Beijing has maintained economic and diplomatic ties with Iran.

Why expectations are cautious

Despite the elaborate welcome and positive public remarks, analysts cited by Reuters said the summit was unlikely to produce a sweeping breakthrough on all major disputes.

Instead, the immediate focus appears to be maintaining dialogue, extending the trade truce and finding areas where the two countries can reduce the risk of further escalation.

The summit is Xi’s first visit to Washington in more than a decade and is the second meeting between the two leaders this year.

The talks are continuing, and details of any agreements could change as the summit progresses.
