Indian Youth Leader Vows to Continue Delhi Protest Despite Detentions of Supporters

Indian youth activist Abhijeet Dipke has vowed to proceed with a major protest in New Delhi on Saturday, October 10, despite reports that authorities have detained supporters of his movement ahead of the planned demonstration.

Dipke, founder of the youth-led Cockroach Janata Party (CJP), is leading a campaign demanding the resignation of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar over a controversial revision of electoral rolls. Opposition parties and student organisations have also joined calls for greater accountability in the voter-list verification process.

In a message posted on social media on Friday, Dipke said he would travel to the national capital and march to Jantar Mantar, the designated protest area, despite the reported detentions.

Protest Planned Amid Tight Security

The CJP says thousands of its supporters have been detained in different parts of the country while travelling to Delhi for the rally. These figures could not be independently verified by Reuters at the time of its report.

Delhi Police have said the party does not have permission for Saturday’s demonstration and warned that participants could face legal action if they violate restrictions.

Authorities have increased security in the capital, with police and paramilitary personnel expected to be deployed around key locations. Restrictions on public gatherings and transport arrangements have also raised concerns about access to the protest site.

Some long-distance train services to Delhi have reportedly been cancelled, while certain metro station exits are expected to remain closed under security arrangements.

Dispute Over Voter-List Revision

The protest centres on the Election Commission’s Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls, an exercise intended to verify voter records and identify entries requiring correction.

Opposition parties and activists argue that the process risks excluding eligible citizens from electoral lists. They have cited figures suggesting that around 130 million voter entries have been affected or flagged during the nationwide exercise and are demanding that the process be reviewed.

The Election Commission has defended the revision, saying the figures relate to an ongoing process and that the draft lists are not necessarily a final record of voters removed. Officials have said people whose names are wrongly excluded can take steps to register again.

The disagreement has become a wider political issue, with opposition groups questioning the transparency of the exercise and the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) rejecting allegations of political bias.

Opposition Parties Join the Campaign

The movement’s protest plans come after several days of demonstrations in Delhi and other cities. Student organisations, activists and opposition supporters have called for Kumar to step down and for concerns about voter-list revisions to be addressed.

Congress leader Rahul Gandhi was among opposition figures briefly detained during a related demonstration earlier this week, according to news reports. Opposition parties have also discussed coordinated action to raise their concerns with constitutional authorities.

The dispute has placed electoral transparency and the right to protest at the centre of a growing political confrontation.

What Happens Next?

Dipke’s announcement signals that the youth movement intends to continue its campaign despite the reported detentions and restrictions. However, the scale of Saturday’s gathering will depend on security arrangements, access to Delhi and whether protesters attempt to assemble without official permission.

The episode highlights the tension between public-order restrictions and citizens’ right to raise political concerns. The outcome of the protest could influence the movement’s next steps and intensify debate over the electoral-roll revision.
