North Korea Releases New Kim Jong Un Photos as Death Rumours and Sister Takeover Claims Spread

North Korea has released fresh photographs of leader Kim Jong Un attending a public exhibition in Pyongyang, drawing renewed international attention after social media posts claimed that he had suffered a serious brain haemorrhage, fallen into a coma and died. The same wave of speculation raised questions about whether his younger sister, Kim Yo Jong, had assumed control of the country.

The claims have not been supported by publicly available medical evidence or independently verified eyewitness accounts. South Korean officials have also said they have received no information supporting reports of Kim’s death.

The newly published images show Kim inspecting clothing and footwear at an exhibition dedicated to North Korea’s light industry. His daughter, Ju Ae, appears alongside him in photographs released by the country’s official media.

Although the images indicate that North Korean authorities are presenting Kim as continuing his public duties, they do not independently establish his precise medical condition. The government has not issued a detailed public response addressing every allegation circulating online.

Public Appearance Comes Amid Online Speculation

North Korean state media reported on October 20 that Kim had visited a garment and footwear exhibition in Pyongyang the previous day. The event was presented as part of the country’s efforts to promote domestic manufacturing and consumer goods.

In the photographs, Kim is shown examining footwear, including a small pink shoe, and looking at garments displayed on mannequins. Other images show him interacting with officials during the visit.

The timing of the release drew attention because reports questioning Kim’s health had spread rapidly across social media. His appearance at a reported public event provided a clear counterpoint to claims that he had already died, although the photographs themselves have not been independently authenticated.

North Korea tightly controls access to its leadership and frequently distributes official images through state media. Foreign journalists are rarely given unrestricted access to events involving Kim, limiting independent verification of the circumstances in which such photographs are taken.

For that reason, the distinction between what the images show and what can be concluded from them is important. They show Kim being presented publicly at an exhibition; they do not amount to a medical assessment or confirm every detail of his health.

How the Allegations Originated

The latest rumours reportedly gained momentum after posts on the social media platform X alleged that Kim had suffered a severe brain haemorrhage and lost consciousness. The claims were attributed to Wanjun Xie, a Chinese dissident based in the United States.

The posts alleged that Kim had been taken to Beijing for emergency treatment because of limitations in North Korea’s medical facilities. They further claimed that he had died and that his body had been returned secretly to North Korea.

No publicly verifiable medical records, named medical witnesses or other independently established evidence were provided to substantiate those allegations.

The claims subsequently received attention from websites and social media accounts, allowing speculation about Kim’s condition to spread beyond the original posts. As the story circulated, additional claims emerged about possible political changes in Pyongyang and alleged Chinese military movements.

South Korean diplomatic and security officials said they had heard nothing to support the reports of Kim’s death. Without independent confirmation, the allegations about a medical emergency, treatment in Beijing and a concealed death remain unverified.

The episode illustrates how claims about highly secretive governments can gain international attention even when the available evidence is limited.

Why Kim Yo Jong Became Part of the Story

Kim Yo Jong, the leader’s younger sister, has held senior positions within North Korea’s political system and has frequently appeared in official statements concerning the country’s relations with South Korea and the United States.

Her prominence has led to recurring discussion about the possible arrangements that could follow a sudden leadership crisis. That background helped make her a focus of speculation after the latest death rumours appeared online.

However, there is no verified evidence that Kim Yo Jong has taken over the government. Neither the release of the photographs nor the online claims establish that a transfer of power has taken place.

North Korea’s political system is highly centralised, and the leadership succession process is not transparent to outsiders. Any assessment of a potential successor therefore requires caution, particularly when the underlying report of a leadership emergency has not been established.

Kim’s daughter, Ju Ae, has also attracted attention through appearances at official events. Her presence alongside her father has encouraged discussion about the longer-term future of the leadership, but public appearances alone do not confirm a formal succession decision.

For now, claims that Kim Yo Jong has assumed power remain speculation rather than a verified political development.

North Korea’s Information Environment Complicates Verification

Information about Kim’s health is difficult to assess because the North Korean government releases limited details about the personal lives of senior leaders. Official announcements and photographs can offer evidence of public activity, but independent observers often have little access to the circumstances behind them.

This creates two separate challenges: determining whether a reported event occurred and establishing what it means for the leader’s health or political position.

The newly released photographs support the conclusion that state media is reporting a public appearance by Kim. They cannot, on their own, rule out every possible health concern. Equally, the absence of independent medical information does not validate claims that he has died or become incapacitated.

Responsible reporting must therefore distinguish documented events from assertions made by anonymous accounts or individuals who have not supplied verifiable evidence.

The same standard applies to allegations of foreign military involvement. Claims that Chinese forces were deployed to North Korea as part of a possible succession crisis have not been substantiated by reliable public evidence in the reporting available so far.

Previous Rumours Have Raised Similar Questions

Speculation about Kim’s health is not new. In 2020, his absence from public events prompted international reports questioning whether he was seriously ill or had died. He subsequently appeared in public again, demonstrating how quickly unconfirmed claims can spread when information from North Korea is scarce.

The latest episode has followed a similar pattern: online allegations were circulated without publicly verifiable proof, and renewed attention focused on the question of who might lead the country if Kim became unable to govern.

North Korea’s nuclear weapons programme, military posture and relationships with neighbouring countries make uncertainty surrounding its leadership an international concern. However, the significance of those broader issues does not remove the need for reliable evidence when reporting specific claims about an individual’s health or a change in government.

What Is Established So Far?

The confirmed development in the current episode is the release of photographs by North Korean state media showing Kim Jong Un at a reported clothing and footwear exhibition in Pyongyang. The images also show his daughter accompanying him.

By contrast, the claims that Kim suffered a fatal brain haemorrhage, entered a coma, received emergency treatment in Beijing or was secretly replaced by his sister have not been independently verified. South Korean officials have said they have no information supporting the reports of his death.

The situation could become clearer if North Korean authorities release further information or if credible independent evidence emerges. Until then, the photographs should be treated as evidence of a reported public appearance—not as a comprehensive statement about Kim’s health or proof of a political succession.
