Iran Says US Response Fails to Resolve Key Disputes

Tensions around the Strait of Hormuz have intensified after Iran described the United States’ response to its proposal for reopening the strategic waterway as insufficient, while fresh attacks on commercial vessels added to concerns over maritime security.

Mohsen Rezaei, Iran’s security chief, said Washington had accepted some of Tehran’s seven conditions but had left other points unclear. Iran has said normal maritime passage cannot be restored under its proposal until its demands are addressed.

The latest developments come as diplomatic efforts to end the US-Israeli war with Iran remain stalled, raising concerns about global energy supplies, shipping costs and regional security.

According to Reuters, Qatar has been relaying messages between Washington and Tehran as part of efforts to resolve the conflict and reopen the waterway.

Why Iran Rejected the US Response

Iran presented its seven-condition proposal during the United Nations General Assembly, offering a framework under which the Strait of Hormuz could reopen and normal maritime traffic could resume within seven days if the conditions were met.

Rezaei said the US response had not provided sufficient clarity on all the points raised by Tehran. He also indicated that Iran was no longer preparing further responses to Washington at that stage.

The White House had not immediately responded publicly to Reuters’ request for comment on the latest statement.

The disagreement leaves the diplomatic process facing another obstacle. The two sides have yet to establish a mutually accepted arrangement that would guarantee safe passage through the waterway while addressing their broader security and political disputes.

Fresh Attacks Raise Shipping Security Concerns

The diplomatic deadlock coincides with reports of fresh incidents involving commercial vessels in and around the Strait of Hormuz and the Gulf of Oman.

Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps Navy said a supertanker had struck a naval mine while using what it described as an unauthorised route through the strait with its navigation systems switched off. The vessel reportedly caught fire.

Separately, the US military said it disabled a commercial vessel in the Gulf of Oman after it allegedly attempted to breach a naval blockade on Iranian ports. The incident added to the competing claims surrounding maritime operations in the region.

The accounts come from the parties involved and have not all been independently verified. The incidents nevertheless underline the risks faced by commercial shipping as military operations and restrictions continue.

Indian Sailors Missing After Vessel Attack

The situation has also raised concerns in India after two commercial vessels carrying Indian crew members were reportedly attacked on October 11.

The Indian Express reported that the tanker MT Petro Dolphin, carrying 11 Indian seafarers, was hit by a drone, leaving two crew members missing. Another tanker, MT Valthera, was struck by an unidentified projectile and caught fire. The Indian crew members aboard the second vessel were reported safe.

Indian authorities were coordinating with Omani officials and ship-management teams as search-and-rescue efforts continued.

The incidents highlight the risks to seafarers working in one of the world’s most strategically important maritime corridors. India has called for de-escalation and the protection of commercial shipping.

Why the Strait of Hormuz Matters to Global Energy Markets

The Strait of Hormuz connects the Persian Gulf with the Gulf of Oman and the Arabian Sea. Before the current conflict, roughly one-fifth of global oil and liquefied natural gas flows passed through the waterway.

Any prolonged disruption can affect crude oil and gas supplies, raise freight and insurance costs, and increase uncertainty for energy-importing economies.

India is particularly exposed to changes in international energy prices because it imports much of its crude oil. A sustained disruption could add pressure to fuel costs, inflation, the rupee and the country’s import bill.

Higher shipping costs can also affect other goods transported through the region, adding to broader economic risks.

Diplomatic Efforts Remain Uncertain

Qatar and other intermediaries have continued efforts to carry messages between Washington and Tehran. However, Iran’s latest statement suggests that important differences remain unresolved.

The immediate challenge is whether the two sides can clarify the disputed conditions, reduce attacks on commercial vessels and establish arrangements that permit safe passage through the strait.

Without an agreement, shipping operators may continue to face uncertainty over routes, insurance and security risks. Energy markets will also remain sensitive to developments in the conflict.

For now, Iran’s rejection of the US response and the latest maritime incidents point to a continuing diplomatic deadlock, with implications for regional stability and global energy supplies.
