Max Verstappen won a dramatic, rain-affected Formula One sprint race at the Singapore Grand Prix on Saturday after Mercedes driver George Russell crashed out while leading on the opening lap. Ferrari’s Lewis Hamilton finished second, with teammate Charles Leclerc completing the podium at the Marina Bay Street Circuit.

The sprint began around 30 minutes later than scheduled after heavy rain left parts of the circuit wet and created difficult driving conditions. Verstappen started from pole position but lost the lead to Russell at Turn 1, before the Mercedes driver spun and hit the barriers at the final corner on the opening lap.

Russell’s crash brought out the safety car and ended his hopes of securing a crucial sprint result. Verstappen regained the lead and controlled the race after the restart, managing the changing track conditions to secure victory for Red Bull.

The result gave Verstappen his first win of any kind in Singapore, although he stressed that his focus remained on Sunday’s main Grand Prix.

George Russell Crashes After Taking the Lead

Russell made an excellent start, passing Verstappen in the opening corners to move into first place. However, his lead lasted less than a lap.

As he exited the final corner, Russell appeared to lose control after running over a painted line on the wet track. His car spun across the circuit and struck the barriers, forcing him to retire.

The incident was a major setback for Mercedes, particularly because Russell had started on the front row and had an opportunity to challenge for victory.

Russell later accepted responsibility for the crash, describing it as a mistake. The incident also triggered a safety-car period, allowing Verstappen to consolidate his position at the front.

Hamilton and Leclerc Secure Ferrari Podium

Hamilton produced a strong performance in difficult conditions to finish second for Ferrari, crossing the line 2.591 seconds behind Verstappen. It was a significant result for the seven-time world champion in a race marked by multiple retirements and limited opportunities for overtaking.

Leclerc finished third, giving Ferrari two places on the podium. He faced a challenging closing phase as his intermediate tyres deteriorated on the drying track.

The result offered Ferrari valuable sprint points and placed both drivers among the leading finishers in a race where simply avoiding mistakes proved crucial.

McLaren Teammates Collide in Late Drama

The sprint produced another major incident on the final lap when McLaren teammates Oscar Piastri and Lando Norris made contact while battling for position.

Piastri was forced out of the race, while Norris continued and finished eighth, earning one championship point. The collision changed the order behind the leading drivers and helped Mercedes’ Kimi Antonelli finish fourth.

The incident added to an already chaotic afternoon in Singapore, with crashes, mechanical problems and difficult weather conditions contributing to a high number of retirements.

Nine Drivers Retire in Chaotic Sprint

The race was marked by an unusually high number of retirements. Nine drivers failed to finish, according to race reports, making it one of the most incident-filled sprint races in Formula One history.

The wet surface created different grip levels across the circuit. While some sections remained damp, standing water in other areas forced drivers to manage their speed carefully.

Several incidents occurred during the race, including a collision involving Lance Stroll and Sergio Perez. Red Bull’s Isack Hadjar also retired after encountering a technical problem.

The safety car remained in use during the early stages as officials worked to manage the consequences of the crashes and allow the race to continue safely.

Verstappen Looks Ahead to Sunday’s Grand Prix

Despite securing the sprint win, Verstappen said Red Bull still needed to improve its starts. He acknowledged that Russell’s crash had helped him regain the lead after a poor getaway.

The Dutchman also made clear that the sprint victory was not the same as winning the Singapore Grand Prix itself. Sunday’s main race will offer a separate challenge, with teams continuing to assess their car performance and tyre strategies.

For Red Bull, the sprint result provides momentum heading into the Grand Prix. Ferrari will also take confidence from Hamilton’s second place and Leclerc’s podium finish, while Mercedes will need to assess Russell’s crash and prepare for the main event.

With the circuit’s changing conditions and multiple incidents shaping Saturday’s race, qualifying and Sunday’s Grand Prix are expected to remain closely watched by teams and fans.
