Starlink Speed Returns to Normal in Ukraine, Defence Minister Reports

Ukraine says the speed restrictions affecting its Starlink and Starshield satellite communication links have been lifted, with the country’s defence ministry reporting stable connections at speeds exceeding 400 kilometres per hour. The announcement marks a reported return to normal operating speeds after more than a week of connectivity problems.

Ukraine’s Defence Minister Yevhenii Khmara said on Saturday that monitoring systems had detected stable connections for equipment travelling faster than 400 kph. The ministry also reported that its speed measurements had returned to normal, offering a key indication that the earlier limitations were no longer affecting performance in the same way.

Monitoring systems report stable high-speed connections

The latest update centres on the speed at which terminals can maintain a satellite connection while moving. This capability matters for military equipment that needs a reliable link while travelling at high speeds.

Ukraine had reported that restrictions introduced earlier in October were affecting connections when drones and other equipment moved beyond certain speeds. The reported threshold had been around 160 kph or lower, according to accounts cited in recent coverage. The new reading of more than 400 kph suggests a substantial improvement in the performance being observed by Ukrainian monitoring systems.

However, the defence ministry has not published the systems’ maximum possible operating speed or detailed technical measurements. Its statement confirms that high-speed connections were being recorded as stable, but does not provide a complete technical explanation of what changed.

What the speed improvement means

The reported improvement could help restore dependable connectivity for equipment that relies on satellite links while moving quickly. Stable connections are important when operators need to receive information, transmit data and maintain control without interruptions.

The earlier slowdown had reportedly caused connection failures during some drone operations. A return to higher operating speeds may therefore reduce one technical obstacle faced by Ukrainian forces. The actual effect on individual missions, however, will depend on connection reliability under operational conditions and other factors affecting equipment in the field.

Full technical details remain limited

Ukraine’s announcement focuses on measured connection performance rather than explaining who initiated the restrictions or the precise technical steps that led to the improvement.

The ministry has not publicly confirmed a maximum speed for Starlink or Starshield in Ukraine. Nor has it released enough technical information to establish whether every terminal and location is now operating without limitations. The reported readings are evidence of improved performance, but they should not be treated as a guarantee that every connection will remain uninterrupted.

For now, the main development is Ukraine’s statement that its monitoring systems are recording stable links above 400 kph and that speed metrics have returned to normal. Further technical updates would be needed to establish whether the restoration is consistent across all equipment and operating areas.
