Trump Rules Out Livestream of Fort Hood Shooter’s Planned Military Execution
US President Donald Trump has said the planned military execution of former Army psychiatrist Nidal Malik Hasan will not be livestreamed. He added that immediate family members of the victims would be allowed to witness the execution in person if they wished.
Execution Scheduled for December
Hasan was convicted for the 2009 shooting at Fort Hood, Texas, that killed 13 people and wounded 32 others. His execution by firing squad is scheduled for December 3 at the same military base.
The Pentagon had previously announced plans to livestream the execution, prompting criticism from lawmakers, religious leaders and human rights advocates. The decision not to broadcast it marks a change from the military’s earlier position.
Debate Over Public Broadcast
Supporters of the livestream proposal argued that broadcasting the execution could demonstrate the consequences of mass violence. Critics warned that showing an execution publicly could be exploitative or used as propaganda.
Trump’s latest announcement means the execution will not be shown live to the general public, although eligible immediate family members may attend in person.
