North Korea Steps Up Drone Warfare Ambitions as Kim Jong Un Watches Weapons Demonstration

North Korean leader Kim Jong Un has called for a rapid expansion of the country’s drone technology after inspecting an exhibition of unmanned aircraft and observing demonstrations involving several weapons systems, according to reports published on October 30.

The event highlights Pyongyang’s growing interest in drones and artificial intelligence (AI) as tools for modern warfare. Kim has emphasized that North Korea must strengthen its capabilities in unmanned aviation to maintain a military advantage as battlefield technology continues to evolve.

The exhibition, held on Thursday, October 29, displayed different types of military drones, including attack drones and multipurpose unmanned aircraft. North Korean state media also reported a subsequent weapons demonstration involving drones, cruise missiles and a large multiple-rocket launcher system.

Kim urged scientists and military researchers to make further advances in unmanned aviation and defence-related AI. The specific targets and timetable for the planned expansion were not disclosed.

Weapons Demonstration Includes Missiles and Rocket Systems

According to North Korean state media, the demonstration featured suicide-attack drones, multipurpose drones capable of launching missiles, tactical cruise missiles and a 600-millimetre multiple-rocket launcher.

State media claimed that some drones and cruise missiles struck an island target with high accuracy. However, the publicly available reports do not provide enough independently verified technical information to establish the full performance of the systems.

South Korea’s military separately reported detecting approximately 10 short-range ballistic missiles launched from the Wonsan area on Thursday. The projectiles travelled roughly 250 kilometres toward waters off North Korea’s east coast, according to South Korean officials.

Seoul condemned the launches, describing them as violations of United Nations Security Council resolutions. Japan also monitored the activity.

The timing placed the missile launches alongside North Korea’s public display of military technology, although it has not been established that every launch was directly connected to the exhibition.

Why Drone Technology Matters to North Korea

Military drones have become increasingly important in conflicts around the world because they can conduct surveillance, identify targets and carry out attacks without placing a pilot inside the aircraft.

Some systems are relatively inexpensive compared with traditional military aircraft. Others can operate alongside missiles, artillery and electronic warfare equipment, giving armed forces additional options on the battlefield.

North Korea’s focus on drones and AI suggests that it wants to broaden its military capabilities beyond conventional missile and nuclear programmes.

AI-assisted systems may eventually help military platforms process information, recognize potential targets or navigate changing conditions. However, the sophistication and operational reliability of North Korea’s latest systems remain difficult to assess from official statements alone.

The country has repeatedly promoted military AI and drone development. Its latest announcement indicates that these technologies remain an important part of Kim’s broader military modernization agenda.

Experience From Russia’s War in Ukraine

Another factor attracting attention is North Korea’s military relationship with Russia.

South Korean intelligence has reported that North Korea sent more than 16,000 personnel to support Russia’s war against Ukraine since October 2024. Such involvement may have exposed North Korean personnel to modern battlefield conditions, including drone operations, electronic warfare and coordination between different weapons systems.

Analysts believe that experience gained through cooperation with Russia could help Pyongyang understand how drones are being used in contemporary conflicts.

The precise extent of any technology transfer or operational learning remains uncertain. Nevertheless, the growing role of drones in the Ukraine war provides a relevant context for North Korea’s renewed emphasis on unmanned systems.

Rising Tensions With South Korea

The latest demonstrations come amid worsening relations between North and South Korea.

Tensions have increased following landmine explosions near the heavily fortified border in September that injured three South Korean soldiers. Seoul accused North Korean forces of responsibility, while Pyongyang denied the allegation.

The two sides have also exchanged accusations over activity near the Demilitarized Zone and raised concerns about possible military countermeasures.

North Korea’s weapons display and missile launches could therefore intensify security concerns in the region. South Korea, the United States and Japan are likely to continue monitoring Pyongyang’s military activity.

At the same time, weapons demonstrations do not automatically indicate that conflict is imminent. They can also serve as displays of military strength or attempts to influence diplomatic calculations.

What Could This Mean for Regional Security?

North Korea’s push to expand drone capabilities could complicate defence planning for South Korea and its allies. Military planners may need to consider not only conventional missile threats but also the possible use of unmanned aircraft in surveillance and attacks.

The growing integration of drones, AI and other weapons systems could also increase the importance of air defence, electronic warfare and early-warning capabilities.

For Washington and Seoul, the challenge will be to assess how much practical capability North Korea has developed, rather than relying solely on claims made during official demonstrations.

The key takeaway is that North Korea is placing greater emphasis on drones and AI as part of its military modernization. Whether the latest systems deliver a substantial improvement in combat capability remains uncertain, but the programme adds another factor to an already tense security environment in East Asia.
